Lasithi prefecture is the easternmost region of the island. It consists of many small coastal towns, picturesque villages off the beaten tourist trail, and luxury cosmopolitan resorts. Nowhere else in Crete is the accommodation choices higher.
Lasithi is the best place in Crete for complete immersion in nature and relaxation. Although some crowded places such as Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Ierapetra, and Sissi the area is still untouched by mass tourism.
Visiting the inland area is a fascinating experience. Lasithi stands out for its amazing nature and nice beaches. Some of the finest beaches on the island are in the Lasithi area with the most famous Vai beach – an exotic sandy beach surrounded by a palm tree forest- located near Sitia town. These beaches have a Caribbean vibe and crystal-clear waters.
A drive around the region will bring you to interesting monasteries, impressive gorges, little towns, tourist sites such as Elounda and Spinalonga, medieval castles, and numerous archaeological sites.
In the Lasithi plateau (with its rural villages and windmills) the villages keep their authenticity and traditional character. Here is the best place to introduce yourself to local life and adapt to the slow rhythm of the locals. Here tradition blends with everyday life.
